MADRID – Spain’s royal family and some of the country’s top sports figures congratulated compatriot Jon Rahm on Monday for his triumph in the United States Golf Open.
Rahm became the first Spaniard to win this Grand Slam tournament on Sunday.
On Twitter, the Royal Palace of Madrid praised Rahm for his triumph in the United States Open, for his rise to the top of the world rankings and for having dedicated his victory to the late golfer Severiano Ballesteros, who died of cancer in May 2011 at the age of 54.
Gerard Pique, a defender with FC Barcelona, and Pau Gasol, a former NBA player, are among the group of sports personalities who took the time to celebrate Rahm’s victory.
Pique dubbed Rahm a “beast” and Gasol pointed out that Rahm “made history” for Spain.
Formula 1 driver Carlos Sainz, tennis player Garbine Muguruza and even former England soccer player Gary Lineker have messaged him through social media.
“Brilliant victory,” wrote Lineker, who wore the FC Barcelona uniform in the late 1980s.

Rahm had to withdraw from the Memorial Tournament two weeks ago, when he held a six-stroke lead after the third round, due to testing positive for coronavirus.
