German judo heavyweights drop out early at the World Cup

On the day after Anna-Maria Wagner’s gold coup, the German judoka were eliminated early in the last individual decisions at the World Championships in Budapest.

Heavyweight Jasmin Grabowski lost to French Julia Tolofua in the round of 16. In the men’s category, Sven Heinle ended up in the 100 kg class after the first fight against former Russian European champion Tamerlan Baschajew.

With one gold from Wagner (78 kg), bronze from Theresa Stoll (57 kg) as well as fifth place from Miriam Butkereit (70 kg) and seventh from Luise Malzahn (78 kg), the German women completely convinced seven weeks before the Olympics. The men, however, disappointed in the big endurance test for Tokyo, not achieving a single place – in judo only the first seven ranks are statistically “counted”.

The mixed team competition is still on in Budapest on Sunday. However, Germany is starting with a B selection and is only an outsider.
