The Biscayan, who has lived in Vitoria since she was 16 years old, wins the Spain title and includes a record, 190 kilos

The year 2021 is being very special at a sporting level for Garoa Martínez (Bermeo, 1997).
After participating for the first time in the European Championship, the Biscayan weightlifter residing in Vitoria managed to put the finishing touch to the month of June with the
first place in the absolute Euskadi Championship -The
female record– and with the
gold medal in Spain in the category of less than 64 kilos of body weight. Records that do nothing more than motivate her to continue on the rise and go for more.

– Taking stock of the past year, she will be very happy, right?

– Yes, really, but I know I can give more, I consider myself an ambitious person, I have room for improvement and that is always good news.

– How is it usually a day when you don’t have to compete?

– I combine training with work, many times it depends on the shift I have. I usually train about four days a week and the free ones I usually do aerobic exercise, although this depends on the competition season I am in. I usually train between 8 and 12 hours a week.

– Before this, did you try any other modality or sport?

– Since I was little I have practiced many sports. I started with handball, then judo, rhythmic gymnastics … until I had surgery on my feet. After that, I became interested in Pilates and the gym.

– I understand that this is all linked to weightlifting.

– What is it, what is it! It cost me. In the Bermeo gym they didn’t let me in until I was 16 years old, there were times when I tried to do it foreign, but they caught me (laughs). When I fulfilled them, I came to Vitoria, I did crossfit and I met a coach who taught you how to weightlift. That’s when it all started a bit.

– The work has paid off with the gold in the national championship, has that thorn been removed from the last two participations -silver in 2019 and bronze in 2020-?

– Totally. Last time I came to the academy and I noticed that mentally I was very blocked, I had the feeling of not wanting to go, I did not see myself well. This year has been different, mentally I felt clear, physically very well and training I had good feelings. He noticed that he had options to make a medal in the championship.

– And all that after first place in the Basque Country and doing a good job in the European Championship, how was your first experience?

– It was great, the last two years I was summoned to go with the sub-23 category, both in 2019 and 2020, but finally I could not go. This time I had the opportunity to go and it was very good.

Lydia’s example

– You recently said that you were looking to improve your technique. Looking at these logs, you’ve done it, haven’t you?

– I am still very aware of it, there is still a lot of room. I notice that I have improved, but I see that there are other registers that are higher and that drives me to go day by day to more, I must be more constant. Deep down I am happy because if I correct all that, I will go further, I know that I can take advantage in many ways and that I can improve in various resources. There is still work ahead.

– Being the month of June, do you have any goals in mind between now and the end of the year?

– I have nothing in mind in mind. The season ends in July and I have not looked at what championships are after. I just look up to the next month ahead.

“I am ambitious, I know that I still have a lot of room for improvement in some aspects”

– The Tokyo Olympics begin shortly and in weightlifting the most iconic Spanish representative is Lydia Valentín …

– He is a person who has been linked to this sport for a long time, he has achieved many achievements and he deserves it for all that he has worked for during these years.
