Gallinari and the Atlanta Hawks in the Conference final: the stages of success

From the Graffignana oratory to Serie A

Danilo Gallinari was born on 8 August 1988 in Sant’Angelo Lodigiano (Lodi). He stayed in the city of the Big Apple until 2011 when he was sold to the Denver Nuggets. After six seasons, in 2017 he joined the Los Angeles Clippers and two years later he signed with the Oklahoma Tunder. After a year, Gallinari separates from Oklahoma and becomes a free agent. In November of last year, he reached an agreement for a three-year deal worth 61.5 million dollars with the Atlanta Hawks. The team came from a bad season but in the new cycle, surprisingly, it took them to the Conference finals. In February of this year, in one of the games against the Boston Celtics, Gallinari set a personal best for three in a game, making 10 out of 12.

Injuries and controversies for the national team

Gallinari made his debut in the national team during the All-Star Game in Turin in 2006 called by coach Recalcati but the numerous injuries affected his path to the Azzurri. In 2007 he did not participate in the European Championships due to a problem in the fibula of the right leg, the first of a series of accidents that kept him away from the court for a long time and that also cost him the lack of presence at the 2009 European Championships. Only in July 2011 is he returned to wearing the blue tank against Macedonia. He took part in the 2011 and 2015 European championships, with Italy losing the consolation final against Lithuania. The following year he was part of the blue expedition to the qualifying tournament for the Rio Olympics but Italy was defeated by Croatia. In July 2017, during a preparation match for the European Championships, he reacted to an elbow from Dutchman Kok by punching him in the face. He fractured the first metacarpal of his right hand and had to say goodbye to the review. Now the commitment in Atlanta has slowed down the Rooster: he will not participate in the Pre-Olympic training camp in Belgrade of the national team that is playing the qualification in Tokyo 2021. After all, with the coach Sacchetti the clutches are nothing new: in 2018 Gallinari said no to the national team for devote himself full time to the Clippers with Sacchetti who replied angrily: “I don’t get on my knees, you have to feel the blue on me.”
