EC footballNo big tournament without a special ball. This also applies to the upcoming European Championship, which will be played with an Adidas Uniforia. High time for an overview of the European Championship balls over the years.
EK 2021: Uniforia
The most modern of all. For EURO 2020, the German sports giant Adidas made the Uniforia. For the first time in its 60-year history, the European Football Championship will be played in 12 different European countries. The artistic design of EC Ball Uniforia is therefore based on the blurring of boundaries, with black lines that merge into one another, reminiscent of paint stripes. You will also find those stripes on the new shirts of the Red Devils – there is a broader concept behind it.
EK 2016: Beautiful Game
At the European Championships in France they chose the ‘Beau Jeu’ (beautiful game). At least for the group stage. A different version was used during the knockout phase: the Fracas. De Beau Jeu was criticized during the tournament after a ball broke down during Switzerland-France.
EK 2012: Tango 12
The Tango 12 was used to play football at the 2012 European Championship in Ukraine and Poland. It’s a modern take on the classic 80s design. After the famous Jabulani mop ball of the 2010 World Cup, this ball had a more stable curve.
EK 2008: Europass
The goalkeepers were also dissatisfied with the Europass, the official ball of the European Championship 2008 in Austria. The rather heavy design also quickly deviated from its line.
EK 2004: Roteiro
Unique design. The Adidas Roteiro was used at the 2004 European Championship in Portugal. It was the first tournament ball to be personalized for each match and it was also the first without stitching. The surfaces were not stitched together but thermally bonded.
EK 2000: Terrestra Silverstream
The ball of EURO 2000, which took place in Belgium and the Netherlands. David Beckham, a then Adidas face, was particularly pleased with the Terrestra Silverstream. “The ball listens well to me.” World champion France’s number ten, Zinedine Zidane, also loved the Terrestra. “It is faster and softer than the traditional balls and allows better football.”
EK 1996: Questra Europa
The Questra Europa was an upgrade of the original Questra used at the 1994 World Cup. At EURO 1996 in England we saw the first colored tournament ball. The ball was decorated with three metal-blue lions and a red rose.
EK 1992: Unique Etruscan
The Etrusco Unico made its appearance at the 1990 World Cup in Italy and was later used during the 1992 European Championship and the Olympic Games of the same year in Barcelona.
EK 1988: Tango Europa
The Tango was one of the most successful football designs ever, with many different versions. For the 1988 European Championship in West Germany, the Tango Europe was played.
EK 1984: Tango Mundial
In 1984 the European Championship, which was held in France that year, got its own tournament ball for the first time: the Tango Mundial.
