Former Red Bull pupil: “I felt a deep aversion to Marko and Red Bull”

Spaniard Jaime Alguersuari was called up by Red Bull in 2009 as the replacement for the disappointing Sebastien Bourdais at Toro Rosso. He didn’t perform badly, but not overwhelmingly well either, and after the 2011 season, the curtain fell for him. He found his salvation in Formula E, but that did not make him happy. Nothing really. Three years after his Formula 1 retirement, he said goodbye to motorsport altogether. The love was no more.

“When I stopped racing I felt a lot of disappointment and pain. My head was still with Formula 1, but my departure had left an open wound,” he says in conversation with Motorsport-Total. “It was a time when I was very angry and deeply disgusted with Formula 1, Helmut Marko, Red Bull and everything that had happened.”

His temporary job as commentator for Movistar was therefore difficult for him: “I tried, but as soon as I got on the track I felt sick. I was not happy on the track and really didn’t want to be there.”

Now, ten years later, he has given everything a place and is mainly grateful for the opportunities he did get: “I was lucky with the opportunities that were offered to me. I have driven many races, even made it to Formula 1 and scored a few runs.”

“Of course I never drove for Red Bull Racing, but I started to realize that I was still privileged and that I should be grateful for that,” continues Alguersuari, who is then asked what happens if he, for example, Helmut Marko or Christian Horner would run into again.

“I can just greet them again and smile. I can now walk back into the AlphaTauri pit box and hug Franz Tost. I now see that the glass was half full. I was lucky.”
