Finland cannot stunt a second time: Russia takes victory thanks to handsome goal Mirantjoek | European Championship 2020

No second stunt. Russia recovered from the defeat against the Red Devils with a win against Finland. Mirantsjoek scored the only goal with a wonderful place ball.

Finland – Russia in a nutshell:

  • Key moment: There is no better time to score than just before halftime. The Finns suddenly had to come up with their plan B and that never came to full fruition.
  • Man of the match: Alexei Mirantjuk put the Russians out of their misery, but the Russian vanguard left something to be desired. Then defender Dzjikiya was a bit more convincing as a rock in the surf.
  • Remarkable: Finland is again unable to score against its neighbors from Russia. That has been since 1995, when current national coach Cherchesov had to grab the ball from his nets.

Ten centimeters ruin a Finnish dream start

Before the European Championship started, Finland seemed to become a bite-sized chunk in the group of the Red Devils. Yet it immediately counted three points after an astonishing game against Denmark. Russia, in turn, was left empty-handed after the 3-0 defeat against Belgium and had to take risks. That sounded like music to the ears of the cunning Finns.

They didn’t wait long to strike, because after a few minutes Pohjanpalo gave the Finns a dream start with a well-aimed header. That dream was soon shattered when VAR noticed the Finnish striker’s offside.

The Russians escaped unscathed and did not have to wait for their first big opportunities. Ozdojev lost sight of the far post, but was unable to score on goal. Then Dzhuba did better from standing. His shot hit the post, but he was also flagged back.

On both sides the game was too sloppy and too often it didn’t stop there. Just before half time Mirantjoek got a little too much space from the Finnish neighbors. With a wonderful place ball in the farthest corner, he gave goalkeeper Hradecky the check and Russia could go to rest with a tiny lead.

Russia holds the three points in savings mode

After the coffee, the Finns had to attack this European Championship for the first time. Pukki looked like he was on his way to a dot of a chance early in the second half, but an ultimate tackle decided otherwise. There was no lack of good will, but that was it initially.

On the other side, the Russians found their way to goal a little easier, but they preferred endless tapping over a shot on target. When Zjemaletdinov and Kuzhayev fired a shot, the goal turned out to be too small or Hradecky was well in the way.

A Finnish final offensive never got off the ground. More than half a header from Arajuuri was not seen by the Finnish supporters and a rare Russian counter-prick did not fall between the posts.

For example, Russia takes 3 much-needed points and has its sequel of this European Championship in its own hands. The Finns are then again temporarily passed by the eastern neighbors and with a duel against the Red Devils face a very tough assignment in their last group match.
