Euro 2021: Thierry Henry back in the Belgian staff three years after the World Cup

“Unfinished business” – understand “unfinished mission” – writes this Sunday the Belgian football team on its social networks. She thus announces the return of Thierry Henry to his staff for the Euro, which begins on June 11.

The former Arsenal and FC Barcelona player, now 43, is expected to take the post of assistant coach alongside Roberto Martinez. He will notably be in charge of the attackers. A mission that he had already carried out during the last World Cup in 2018, having joined the staff in August 2016. The Red Devils, beaten by the French team in the semi-final, had finished in third place in the competition.

Thierry Henry had left his functions with the Belgian staff, shortly after the World Cup, in order to try his luck at AS Monaco. Successor of Leonardo Jardim, the new coach was sacked after three months, after a series of defeats to bounce back in Canada.

The former French international finally left the head of the Montreal squad last February for personal reasons, after fifteen months spent in this Major League Soccer club. “It is with a heavy heart that I decided to make this decision, explained Thierry Henry, referring to the lack of his children because of the health situation. The separation is too painful for me and for them. I must therefore make the decision to return to London and leave CF Montreal ”. We will find him on the bench of the Belgian selection from June 12. The Red Devils will start their competition against Russia.
