Euro 2021: the Blues qualified for the eighth … without playing!

A qualifier in front of the sofa. The France team officially qualified for the knockout stages of Euro Monday evening, thanks to the combined victories of Austria over Ukraine in Group C and Belgium against Finland in B. With these results, the Blues are assured, with their four points already gleaned, to finish at least among the best four thirds of the group stage which will see the final table. And whatever the result of the last group match against Portugal, Wednesday night in Budapest.

This revenge of the final of Euro 2016 is still high stakes for the France team, since it will determine its final place in the pool and therefore its opponent for the eighth. A victory and the Blues would finish first and face a third group: Switzerland, Finland or Ukraine. A draw, combined with a victory for Germany against Hungary, would send France to London, to face the winner of England-Czech Republic on Tuesday night. A defeat, on the other hand, could push the Blues back to third place in their group and force them to face a group first, either Belgium or the Netherlands.

Note that in this same group B, the large victory of Denmark, which blew up Russia (4-1), would also have offered the Blues their ticket to the eighth finals. But above all, it allows the Danes to grab second place in their group and a miraculous qualification in eighth, after two defeats at the start. Thanks to these results, the Czech Republic, Sweden and England, in the same case as France, are also qualified.
