Euro 2020/2021: Christian Eriksen: “I’m fine, I want to understand what happened to me”

Christian Eriksen continues to be the protagonist of this European Championship. The Danish midfielder collapsed during the Nordic team’s first game against Finland that shocked the entire football world and wanted to send a message of calm to all fans.

The footballer did so through the Italian newspaper ‘La Gazzetta dello Sport’, with a message in which he thanks the doctors for their help after the collapse and all the fans for the support they have shown him at this difficult time: «Thank you all, I do not give up. I feel better now, but I want to understand everything that happened ».

The 29-year-old wanted to have a special memory of the medical team that treated him on the pitch and that was key to saving his life. He also wanted to have words of thanks to his current club, Inter Milan: «I want to thank everyone for what they have done for me. The Inter family has been very close to me and it moved me ».

Eriksen collapsed in the 42nd minute of the match between Denmark and Finland on Saturday. After making a run-off, the Danish captain was looking to receive a ball from a team-mate on a throw-in when he collapsed and lost consciousness. The situation caused immediate alarm and the intervention of the doctors, to the dismay of his colleagues, who wanted to protect his privacy by forming a circle around him and the doctors who were working to save his life.

The moments of anguish experienced on the lawn lasted for 15 minutes. The doctors tried to recover it while in the stands an impressive silence was ‘heard’ and the faces of fans and footballers made us fear the worst.

The situation was very complicated, as the Danish national team doctor told us: “When we got to him he was on his side: he was breathing and I felt his pulse. But suddenly there were no more heartbeats and, as everyone could see, we began the heart massage. Help came very, very quickly from the medical staff and with their collaboration we were able to do what we had to do. We have started to intervene to keep him alive. Luckily he clung to life.
