EM 2021 | Robin Gosens: From the village disco to the new German EM star

In the 4: 2 against Portugal, Robin Gosens made his best game in the dress of the national team – and what a game. In terms of his nature, he is also reminiscent of an earlier popular figure.

It was the 47th minute of the second preliminary round match against Portugal, as Germany Robin Gosens on the left defensive side Cristiano Ronaldo pursued to the baseline, straddled – and whose attempt on the flank ended in German possession.

The crowd raged at Gosen’s unrestrained commitment. The 26-year-old from Emmerich am Rhein (North Rhine-Westphalia) made the game of his life in the eyes of many fans this Saturday evening – even if national coach Joachim Löw thought this was too high: “I don’t know whether he made the game of his life . He may still have that to come. “

You can see what Robin Gosens himself says about his appearance in the video above or directly here.

Löw sums up: “Robin played with an emphasis on fighting and was dangerous for goals. What he showed is what we need.” He convinced with dedication and passion, carried away the audience and ensured something among the fans that was recently rare in connection with the DFB-Elf: enthusiasm. A few years ago, however, it was not foreseeable that Gosens would one day become a bearer of hope.

With “three Atü on the kettle”

Gosens is not your typical modern footballer. It does not come from one of the many youth academies that so many of his national team colleagues went through. His way was a different one. An unconventional one. As the only player in Joachim Löw’s squad, Gosens has no Bundesliga experience – and admits to it Gaps in the rule of thumb.

Born close to the Dutch border, Gosens played in April 2012 at the age of 17 in the A-youth of VfL Rehde in the Niederrheinliga.

The biggest rival was 1. FC Kleve. But perhaps the even bigger opponent was the “Blues” village disco, where Gosens and his teammates regularly stopped off on the eve of the Sunday game. Including kebab at four in the morning, of course.

One day Gosens was back on the square, drunk and with a lack of sleep. His VfL Rehde won 3-1 anyway. Gosens, who believed he could “play better with three Atü”, just wanted to take a shower. But a scout from Arnhem stopped him – and offered him a trial training session. Gosens convinced and moved to Vitesse in Arnhem, 30 minutes away by car from Rehde, and played there for the club’s youth from now on.

Gosen’s DFB debut is canceled

He matured into a professional in the Netherlands. From Arnhem it went to the second division Dordrecht to the Dutch first division Heracles Almelo. From there he moved in 2017 for the transfer fee of 1.17 million euros, which is ridiculous in modern football Atalanta Bergamo in the A league.

In Italy, the eloquent player developed into one of the best players in the league. Coach Gian Piero Gasperini played a decisive role in this, who trained him in football and tactics and raised him to a new level.

With Atalanta, Gosens, who acts on the left wing in the club and in the national team, mixed up the league. Until the Champions League His path led him before the pandemic in March 2020 brought both Gosen and Atalanta’s soaring to an abrupt end.

He and his girlfriend Rabea, who live together in an attic apartment in the middle of the city, drove the mandatory isolation into quarantine with Tiktok videos and courtyard sports. The pandemic came at absolutely inopportune time for Gosens. In February, national coach Löw had announced that he would be nominated for the international matches in March. Gosens’ DFB debut was canceled.

Müller jersey as motivation

But Gosens does not despair – on the contrary. To motivate himself, the son of a Dutchman hangs a DFB jersey from Thomas Müller, worried by Atalanta teammate Marten de Roon, in the middle of his window. “Robin Gosens will seamlessly build on his previous achievements and soon call himself a German national player – there was no doubt about that, I made a firm commitment,” writes Gosens in his personal biography “Dreams are worthwhile”, which was published last April.

It was the Müller, whose national team career seemed to be over, who did not let Gosens despair – and with whom he now won the second European Championship group game against Portugal. Gosens contributed two assists and one goal. Bastian Schweinstiger last made three goals in a European Championship game in 2008 – against Portugal.

“We value him very much as a guy. He is active in communication and has a good relationship with all the players,” the national coach praised him after the redeeming victory. “He is clear in the head, straightforward. A guy, like his game. Clear edge, he fights for everything that is important to him.” Somebody like Podolski? Maybe even better.

Gosens: “I’m missing someone again”

Gosens himself was also pure joy to see after the game. “Joachim Löw heated us up yesterday. Today it was an all-or-nothing game. There was pressure on the boiler. We put everything into it and I’m happy that we were rewarded,” said the “Man of the Match.” ” beaming.

However, Laufmaschine Gosens did not seem to have really realized what he had experienced. “You can tweak me. Even then I don’t think so,” he flattered with ARD reporter Lennert Brinkhoff after his second international goal.

“A goal for them National team shooting is always special. Then another game like that – I’m missing one again. I will enjoy this today and tomorrow. But then the journey continues in the direction of Hungary. “In fact, everything is now possible for the national team: from first place to fourth place.

It is likely that Gosens will be able to play against Hungary. The adductors hurt him, so that the game against Portugal for the son of a doctor’s assistant and a building contractor was over after an hour. The injury was “nothing dramatic,” said national coach Löw after the game.

Gosens himself dared not just look ahead at the press conference after the game. He threw one back too. “The victory means everything to me. The trophy (for the player of the game, editor’s note) is gigantic, that cannot be put into words. When I look back on the path I have taken, it is indescribable. That will be remembered forever. An evening that I will never forget in my life. ”
