World champion France desperate for Hungary – the highlights in the video

In Budapest’s cauldron, Hungary took the lead against world champions France shortly before half-time, and even sniffed the big sensation for a long time. Antoine Griezmann saves the French from embarrassment. All highlights here in the video.

World champion France stumbles in the cauldron of Budapest and only comes to a draw at the EM against the great outsider Hungary. Goal scorer Antoine Griezmann then provides surprising explanations.

Marco Rossi had foreseen what his team would expect against the world champion. “To win against such teams, you have to bring 110 percent. At the same time you have to hope that the opponent does not reach his top level. And you need luck too, ”said Hungary’s coach.

The luck in the 1: 1 (1: 0) against France came in stoppage time in the first half. Then defender Attila Fiola ended a counterattack staged like a raid with the goal of 1-0 lead (45th + 2) for the hosts. The packed Budapest Puskas Arena fell into an adrenaline rush, and the favored French could not believe their eyes. Hungary had turned the game upside down.

That it wasn’t enough for Hungary to win was due to Antoine Griezmann. The French midfielder prevented a defeat for the world champions with his equalizer in the 66th minute. Didier Deschamps, France’s coach, had warned of such a situation in advance: “We are world champions and we are aware of our strengths,” he told WELT AM SONNTAG. “But we mustn’t make the mistake of turning self-confidence into arrogance.”

“I’m done,” says Griezmann

Hardly anyone expected that the blatant outsider Hungary would show the “Equipe Tricolore” the limits. Cheered on by 55,062 spectators, the tactically extremely disciplined Rossi-Elf offered the opponent a passionate fight. “We have to pull ourselves up and rest to beat Portugal,” said Griezmann after the exhausting race to catch up and looked perplexed: “I don’t know what was missing … I’m done. It was really hot. That was a difficult game with the fans. It was the first time for us in a full stadium. We are no longer used to a full stadium. We didn’t hear each other. “

And Deschamps also said in view of the temperatures: “Maybe all these circumstances had more influence on us than on the opponent. We’re doing our best, but we’re out of breath. ”

The atmosphere in the Budapest Puskas Arena was reminiscent of the times before the corona pandemic. Officially, only vaccinated fans (at least once) were allowed in the stadium. Nevertheless, in view of the uncertain pandemic situation, the spectators’ trips to the venues caused criticism – by the way, as did the protest actions by some teams against racism and homophobia.

The French originally wanted to take part in this, but then rowed back. “We play football, we don’t do politics,” said Deschamps. “We don’t care about the rest. We have no control over it. And we’re here for something else. ”This attitude is all the more astonishing as the European football association Uefa, for example, has no problem interfering in the interests of sovereign states such as Great Britain by demanding special rights for VIPs.

Hitler salute from the hooligan block

In the autocratically ruled Hungary, as in the EM co-host Russia, they have fewer problems with such tough specifications. And otherwise the Deschamps thesis of the apolitical game seems strange. The infamous ultra-grouping Carpathian Brigade in the Budapest stadium was also unmistakable that afternoon.

The hooligans of the Hungarian national team, recognizable by their black T-shirts, are mostly made up of neo-Nazis. In the first group game against Portugal, some of them had attracted attention by showing the Hitler salute. Uefa has not yet commented on the violent black bloc among Hungary’s fans.

In the 59th minute, France’s Ousmane Dembélé then narrowly failed to equalize with a shot from the post. Griezmann finally succeeded in the 66th minute after submission by Kylian Mbappé. But Hungary was not impressed by the setback and repeatedly provided relief with dangerous counterattacks. France, on the other hand, seemed increasingly to despair of the Hungarian defensive bulwark. It would be a game in which “900 million euros against 60 million euros”, Hungary coach Marco Rossi had stated in the run-up to the game. It was all the more astonishing what his team achieved.

He had given the watchword to want to get one or the other point with his team at the EM. At the same time, however, the Italian emphasized that if necessary he would be satisfied with less. “I could also be happy if I see the right attitude, the right personality from my players on the pitch to implement our tactical guidelines.” In this respect, Rossi and his team should be overjoyed after the game against the world champions. And the next opponent in Hammer Group F is certainly warned after this impressive performance by the Hungarians. The opponent is on Wednesday evening: Germany.
