Germany’s round of 16 bill – these opponents are possible
Stand: 12:49 p.m.| Reading time: 3 minutes
The door to the round of 16 is wide open for Germany after beating Portugal. The group victory is just as possible as the elimination. There is one big advantage: the time of the last game. The first opponents emerge.
NAfter the convincing win against Portugal (4: 2), the German national team has its fate in its own hands again at the European Championship.
“The next game will be even tougher because Hungary is lower, defends with eight or nine people and is hoping for a few individual counterattacks. We have to work like today, so we have to put pressure on our opponents. Then we can move forward step by step, ”said national coach Joachim Löw after the Portugal victory.
Before the final group game against Hungary on Wednesday evening (9 p.m., WELT live ticker), the DFB selection has several options to advance to the round of 16.
Germany wins against Hungary
Then the move into the EM round of 16 is certain. If France do not win in the parallel game against Portugal, Germany would even be group winners, and if France win group runners-up.
Germany plays a draw
A draw after the win against Portugal is also definitely enough for a place in the round of 16. If Portugal does not win against France, the DFB selection moves on as second in the group.
If Portugal wins, the DFB selection would be third, but would definitely reach the round of 16 as one of the four best thirds in the group. The Löw-Elf would then have four points and a goal difference of +1. The third in groups C and E can no longer achieve this value after the Spaniards 1: 1 against Poland.
Germany loses against Hungary
In the event of a defeat, Germany threatens the EM preliminary round. Only if France wins against Portugal would the DFB-Elf be third in the group and ideally still be one of the four best thirds in the group. If the French play a draw or lose, Germany is eliminated from the bottom of the group if they lose to Hungary.
All teams in the group have one big advantage: the scheduling. Since the final games in Group F are the last of the preliminary round, it will be clear at the kick-off which result is needed to get into the four best group third in case of doubt.
In the event that the Löw-Elf make it to the round of 16, the DFB has decided to stay in the team quarters in Herzogenaurach until the quarter-finals.
As group winners, Germany would play its round of 16 in Bucharest on Monday, June 28th at 9:00 p.m. Opponent would be a third placed from another group. In second place (at the moment probably the most likely variant), the team will compete in London on Tuesday, June 29th at 6:00 p.m. Opponent would be the winner of group D (England, Croatia, Czech Republic, Scotland).
In both cases, the team would set off for the games on a charter plane from Nuremberg Airport, 40 kilometers away. If you qualify as a third party, the place and date have not yet been determined.
Should Germany make it to the semi-finals, the DFB is planning a move to London. The semi-finals and the final will be played there. The German team would then live in a hotel there and train on a training ground provided by UEFA.
