“Did Bono miss the U2?”

On Friday evening, the pan-European football championship started. A reason to be happy for many fans. But even the opening ceremony caused some viewers to frown. The official anthem was presented digitally and was therefore less than spectacular.

After a long time without major tournaments, the finally started on Friday European Football Championship. After a pompous performance by opera star Andrea Bocelli, which was accompanied by an artist in the air, it continued a little less spectacularly.

The audience then got to see a virtual version of the official EM anthem. U2-Singer Bono and the guitarist of the band The Edge performed their song “We are the People” together with DJ Martin Garrix. The Edge and Martin Garrix stood in an animated empty stadium and Bono appeared in an oversized hologram that consisted of numerous pixels.

Many viewers who subsequently exchanged ideas on Twitter could only do little with this representation. In front of the television at home, it seemed to some as if only the guitarist and DJ were present, while Bono was being served from afar. That caused a lot of malice and ridicule on the internet.

“Sorry, that’s it for me”

“Sorry, that’s it for me,” wrote one angry viewer. “What kind of plastic shit is that?” He asked in view of the many virtual clips that accompanied the opening ceremony of the EM. “So having Bono come in person was too expensive?” Asked another observer. Another user quipped: “Did Bono miss the U2 to the stadium, or why isn’t he there?”

In fact, the performance of the artists was only in digital form and none of the musicians was in the stadium for the performance. “The virtual nonsense was the official EM song?” Someone asked skeptically. And that’s how it was. UEFA published a short clip of the performance on Instagram in advance. The entire performance was recorded in advance and shown to the spectators, while the stadium was presumably being rebuilt on site.

Bono and The Edge still proud

Bono and The Edge were happy about it anyway. Shortly before, they announced on Instagram: “We’re so excited about our Roman adventure and because we’re part of the opening ceremony tonight.” At the same time, the two of them acted humble, saying they knew they were not “the one anyone is waiting for” and instead greeted the players and everyone Football fans throughout Europe and the world with the addition: “Because full stadiums is what everyone wants, whether for sport or music.”

The first game of the EM was played in Rome. Italy played against Turkey. Germany’s first game will take place on Tuesday.
