DFB:Fewer members

The German Football Association (DFB) complains of a decline in amateur members due to the corona pandemic. As the DFB announced on Tuesday, 1.81 million players were active on the ball in the 2020/21 season – around ten percent less than in the previous season. This is “primarily due to the lack of sports offers in the past 15 months and the severely limited opportunities to play football at all during this time”. The number of registered soccer teams (138,442 teams) also fell by 2.5 percent. According to the DFB, however, this decline is “even less than in the previous years, when sports operations were not yet subject to any corona restrictions”. The available data made it clear that “we are facing great challenges,” said the acting DFB General Secretary Heike Ullrich: “But they also show how robust and resilient amateur football and its clubs are.”
