De Vrij: ‘De Ligt has again fully participated in the training’

After a day of recovery and rest from the first European Championship match with Ukraine, the button of the Dutch national team was turned towards Austria on Tuesday. Matthijs de Ligt fully participated in a training session behind closed doors and that looked good, Stefan de Vrij said.

“It looked really good and he seems ready to play,” said the 29-year-old defender. De Vrij was also happy with the reports about Christian Eriksen, his teammate at Internazionale.

Didn’t sleep well

The Dane, who suffered a cardiac arrest during the European Championship match with Finland on Saturday, posted a cheerful photo on Instagram and wrote that he is doing well under the circumstances. “The reports are positive, I hope he will be back to normal soon.”

De Vrij, like many of his teammates, had had a hard time with it. “It was very hard. When it happened, I looked at it for ten minutes, but it was very difficult.”

“I know him well and I get along very well with him. I spoke to him recently,” says De Vrij. “Fortunately, news came fairly quickly that he was doing well.”

The incident with Eriksen made the preparation for the duel with Ukraine very different. “I didn’t sleep well either, your thoughts are with him anyway. Such a boy who has always passed all the tests and who was top fit. And then something like this happens. It is really scary.”
