CyclingNot Rui Costa, but Andreas Kron has won the sixth stage of the Tour de Suisse. The Portuguese ex-world champion crossed the line first, but was returned to second place after a sweep in the sprint.
The peloton was presented with another tough stage in the Tour of Switzerland. Mathieu van der Poel, who won two stages, did not start again. The 26-year-old Dutchman is struggling with a mild cold. “We don’t want to compromise his health in view of his future goals,” he said.
Who did show up today was Julian Alaphilippe. Due on his 29th birthday. The world champion was irritated after his time penalty yesterday (20 seconds after throwing away a drinking bottle where it was not allowed) and attacked with Mattia Cattaneo, Marc Soler and Antonio Nibali.
The foursome were caught early, after which a large leading group, including Mauri Vansevenant, isolated themselves from the peloton. An interesting situation. Especially since in the background the foot went off the accelerator.
David de la Cruz saw his chance and went solo with more than 40 kilometers from the finish. But after a one-man show of less than an hour, the Spaniard was overtaken in the final phase by teammate Rui Costa, Andreas Kron and Hermann Pernsteiner. Vansevenant had no answer in the house.
The trio headed to the finish in Disentis. Costa started the sprint from afar and then held off Kron. But: Costa deviated from his line and was subsequently returned to second place by the competition jury. Thus, the sixth stage was still a prey for Kron. Bingo for Lotto-Soudal.
