CM Cincinnati Reds vs San Diego Padres Prediction, Preview & Odds – 6/18/2021

The Cincinnati Reds hope to capitalize on the San Diego Padres’ collapse while staying on the road for the ensuing four-game series. After sweeping the Milwaukee Brewers, the Reds have maintained their reputation as one of baseball’s hottest teams. However, they will be tested by a Padres team desperate for a series victory after losing eight of their last 10 games, including three in a row to the Colorado Rockies. Chris Paddack will be the first pitcher with the ball in his hands against Tony Santillan of Cincinnati.

They entered Thursday’s opener on a seven-game winning streak on the road. It will be interesting to see if the momentum from those wins can propel them to a win over the struggling San Diego Padres, especially with starting rookie Tony Santillan on Friday.

Yes, I understand some are already rushing to dump dirt on the Padres, but they’re still an incredibly talented baseball team. What better time to bounce back than at home against a rookie arm?

Santillan’s big-league debut in Cincinnati against the Colorado Rockies was promising: five hits, one earned run and five strikeouts in 4.2 innings. But everyone knows you have to play against the Rockies at Coors Field to get a legitimate look. That’s a huge difference between the Padres and a Rockies team with the worst road record in baseball.

The Reds will have to carry thunder on offense if things get out of hand. They are more than capable of surviving the Padres in a shootout with the team averaging 5.05 points per game. Santillan may be the rookie, but San Diego starting pitcher Chris Paddack will be just as stressed about facing the explosive Cincinnati lineup.

Second baseman Mike Moustakas is still on the sidelines after suffering a setback with his initial heel injury in his first rehab game.

Things have evolved to the point where they have yet to win a single series in the month. To make matters worse, they were swept away by a Rockies team with the NL West Division’s second-worst record in their previous playoff meeting.

Friday night, they will be at home against a Reds team that plans to pitch a rookie pitcher. These are must-have games for the Padres.

The Reds played better defensively, but their field still has the worst ERA (5.56) in the league. This is one of the few opportunities the Padres will have to rightfully show some offensive life and build some confidence. They still have a lot of baseball to play, and they can turn it over if they don’t fall too far into the abyss.

Chris Paddack has been named as the man responsible for preventing the Reds offense from blowing up the game early on. He throws a 4.14 ERA with a WHIP of 1.16 and a 3-5 record. There can be no relaxation in the face of an attack as dynamic as the Reds have been this season. All they need is a good base hit to trigger the domino effect.

Insider Status:

Tony Santillan’s experience won’t go so well this time around against a team of Padres who will finally retaliate. Growing pains are to be expected from a rookie who gets his feet wet in the big leagues. However, it is much deeper than that of the Padres.

They’re even further behind the San Francisco Giants and Los Angeles Dodgers, and a loss to the visiting Reds with a rookie pitcher at the start would be something of an upset. I expect the Padres to ruin Santillan’s night before going to work against the troubling Cincinnati enclosure.

Most importantly, this evening will be dedicated to Chris Paddack fighting against one of the hottest teams in baseball right now. At the very least, he’ll avoid the big hits to help the Padres stay in the fight. June has brought nothing but bad luck to San Diego this season, but change is on the horizon, at least for Friday.

Insider Status:

Chris Paddack may be able to stop the Reds from blowing up the scoreboard, but he won’t stop them completely. They’ve been too fiery on the road to see that effort come to a halt against a Padres team averaging 6.33 points per game in their previous series with the Rockies. The Reds have the league’s fourth scoring attack and will be in full attack mode against Paddack. But so will the Padres against rookie pitcher Tony Santillan. This will be his first real welcome in the big leagues. Give me the upper hand in this game.
