The judoka from Queretaro, Gilberto Cardoso, said goodbye to any possibility of qualifying for Tokyo 2021, after falling in the first round of the Senior World Championship of the specialty against the Kazakh, Zhansay Smagulov.

“It leaves me a bit bitter, it was the last qualifier for the Olympic Games and I was forced to win four fights to qualify, unfortunately I lost in the first round and officially did not qualify for the Olympic Games. You have to try 100 times more ”, declared the gladiator of the -73 kg division for Noticias.

Before the World Cup, Cardoso had a small sprain to his knee and that reduced his physical condition, in addition to having trouble adapting to the time change and he arrived tired on the day of the competition, which further complicated his participation in Hungary.

“Physically and technically I felt good, but had a small problem prior to the competition since training at CNAR I injured my knee. It was not serious, but I had to stop for three days without doing judo in the absence of a week for the competition, I limited myself to doing exercises like running and things that included leg work. When it comes to fighting, it doesn’t feel the same, it didn’t give me a lot of confidence because most of my techniques are with my legs and knees, and I feel that it did influence, ”he explained.

After being left out of the Olympics, the Queretaro accepted that this process left him lessons that will propel him on his way to Paris 2024, remembering that he is barely 22 years old, but if he wants to advance to the next Games he has to be constantly getting among the first seven of the Grand Slams.

“For an Olympic qualification it is not enough to give everything, you have to give more, it is very difficult because there is a lot of competitive level all over the world. Unfortunately Mexico is not a power in this sport and genetically the Europeans are very strong, if I want to qualify for the next Olympic Games I have to do many things, prepare in Europe because here I could not develop as I wanted, I need to take a higher competitive level and fight with the better to learn new things, improve my grip and my techniques “

For now, Gilberto will rest for a couple of weeks in which he fully recovers from his knee and later he will resume training for the qualifying for the Central American and Caribbean Games 2022, which is scheduled for November and with which he hopes to start with the right foot your way in the new olympic cycle.

This would be his first appearance in the fair absolute Caribbean center, highlighting that in the area his main rival, at least according to the ITF world ranking, is the Cuban Magdiel Estrada.

“I hope that in future competitions I can give good news and get on the podium, it is not an easy sport and the support to prepare at the highest level influences. But I hope to give an important medal for Mexico soon ”, he added.
