BASKETBALL – Manuel Fortuna is arrested and released after an incident with the National Police

Manuel Fortuna, a former member of the national basketball team, was arrested and later released during an incident with agents of the National Police registered on Sunday night in the Villa Juana sector.

Amaury Durán, from the Rafael Barias club, to which Fortuna belongs, explained that he and his wife Gissell shared after being invited by Yohansi Minaya, from the Mauricio Báez club, who on Sunday was crowned champion of the superior basketball tournament of the National District by sweeping the final 3-0 to San Lázaro.

The incident occurred after the start of the curfew schedule imposed by the government to combat the increase in cases and positivity amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

Fortuna, his wife, Minaya, Daniel Núñez – another Mauricio Báez player – and that club’s assistant José Augusto Pérez were arrested. Images on social media show police officers dragging Fortuna on the ground.

The detainees were taken to the Villa Juana detachment and later released since they had their respective permits except for Pérez, who was released on Monday morning, according to Durán’s explanation.

Fortuna has been a member of different national teams since 2006 and is one of the winners in the history of the district superior basketball tournament where he has belonged to champion teams with the Los Mina, Rafael Barias, Huellas del Siglo and Bameso clubs.

He is considered one of the best players in position two (shooter defense) in the history of Dominican basketball.
