Austria achieves top start at European Softball Championships

After finishing third in the first group stage of the European Softball Championship, Team Austria started today with a win in Group H.

After the narrowly missed promotion to the intermediate round of the top teams, the Austrians continued the European softball championship in Italy in Group H on Wednesday. While Martina Lackner-Keil pitched for Team Austria the previous days, Emma Hannika and Carla Langhtaler got the chance to prove themselves from the Circle against Bulgaria. The Bulgarian offensive got off to a good start against Hannika.

While Team Austria remained without points for the time being, the opponents scored three runs in the first section. In the second inning, however, the offensive of the red-white-red selection got underway. With four singles and four batted-in runs, Austria took the lead for the first time in the second section. Bulgaria was able to equalize in the second inning, but then Team Austria’s offensive could no longer be held.

Sophie De Rouin opened a seven-run inning with a double. Carla Langhtaler took over the position on Mount for Emma Hannika and ended the game prematurely after the fifth inning in favor of the Austrians within two innings and only one allowed run. With two runs, three hits and two RBI, Miriam Gubo became the player of the game. After the 14: 5 success against Bulgaria, the next opponent in Group H awaits on Thursday, Croatia.
