Australian baseball team’s withdrawal from Tokyo Olympics quarantine requirements is the main reason

On June 10, Beijing time, due to the travel risks caused by the new crown virus, the Australian Olympic baseball team has withdrawn from the Tokyo Olympics baseball qualifiers and also waived its qualifications for the Tokyo Olympics.

The Chief Executive Officer of the Australian Baseball Association Glenn Williams said that Australia will not send a team to the tournament to be held in Mexico from June 22 to 26. He said: “We work through a variety of options and programs. As locations and dates change, these plans become outdated. The logistical challenges of providing a safe environment for the team are insurmountable.”

It is reported that even if Australia participated and won the qualifiers, subsequent quarantine requirements made it impossible to participate in the Tokyo Olympic Games that began on July 23. This is also one of the reasons why the Australian baseball team gave up participating in the qualifiers.

The Netherlands, Dominica and Venezuela will compete for the final Olympic spot in the qualifiers. The team ranked first in the Puebla match will advance to the final, and the second and third-placed teams will meet in a single game to compete for the spot in the single final.

The winners of the qualifiers will participate in the Olympic baseball games in Fukushima and Yokohama from July 28 to August 7. South Korea, Mexico, Israel, the United States and the host country Japan have all qualified for the Olympics.

Baseball returned to the Olympic family after being cancelled in 2012 and 2016. Cuba won gold medals in 1992, 1996 and 2004. The United States won Olympic gold medals in 2000 and South Korea in 2008. Baseball is likely to be cancelled at the 2024 Paris Olympics and then resumed again at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
