Ontarian Denis Shapovalov needed two tiebreakers to defeat Australian Aleksandar Vukic 7-6 (6), 7-6 (6) in the first round of the tournament in London on Tuesday.
Shapovalov scored 20 aces and didn’t face a break point. However, he only created two breakage chances that Vukic managed to save.
Shapovalov only managed 57 percent of his first serves, but still gained 90 percent of the points when he did.
In the next round, Shapovalov will cross swords with Spaniard Feliciano Lopez, who defeated Ukrainian qualifier Illya Marchenko 6-1, 7-6 (6).
