René Higuita was announced on Wednesday by Atlético Nacional as institutional leader and member of the new football committee, which will include Francisco Maturana as director of development and training football. This Thursday, the former purslane archer referred to his new stage in the institution and praised ‘Pacho’, who left the DIM board of directors to join the green.

“I confess that I did not expect this welcome for the most important coach in our history, and for a young man who is a fan of the club, who has been preparing for years to take on this challenge. I only ask for good energy, support and above all respect for those who have achieved great part of our history and who laid the first bricks to make this institution the largest in the country, “said Higuita through Twitter.

And he added: “we are fortunate to have a teacher like Francisco in the institution.” It should be remembered that with René as a goalkeeper, Maturana won the Copa Libertadores title from the technical bench in 1989.

“This is football and anything can happen. No one is guaranteed success, however we all have the right to demonstrate our capabilities. The illusion is great, here we are all fans to die and we leave our lives for that club.”

The purslane idol is not changed by anyone for being part of Atlético Nacional again. For this reason, through social networks he expressed his joy to return and even made a confession that his wife, Magnolia Echeverri, surely does not like very much. René took advantage of his statement in networks to ask the fans and all those who are part of Atlético Nacional that they should be more united than ever. “I feel the obligation to unite, to be a link between the fans, the players and the institution.”

Higuita left the club in 2019, after the arrival of Juan Carlos Osorio. He had been a goalkeeper coach since 2017, watching the coaching staff of Juan Manuel Lillo, Jorge Almirón, Hernán Darío Herrera and Paulo Autuori parade. Now he comes back to give Maturana a hand; Alejandro Restrepo and Francisco Nájera, who will lead the club’s minor divisions.
