Arnar Vidarsson explains the French tactics: “Even better than 5 years ago” | European Football Championship 2020

France has a world team, mainly offensively, but “Les Bleus” made the difference against Germany mainly defensively. A good start to the tournament for the world champion.

“Who beats France will become European champion?” asked Karl Vannieuwkerke in Villa Sporza. “I think so,” said Frank Boeckx. “But so much can happen in a big tournament. You can beat France and then lose to a weaker country on paper.”

“I think they are even stronger than at the World Cup,” adds Mo Messoudi. “Especially defensively and with Benzema there they are even stronger offensively.”

Arnar Vidarsson agrees and explains. “Their tactical discipline is world-class. Those men always do what they have to do from the organization. They have become even stronger in that than five years ago (when France reached the final of the European Championship and played against Iceland, ed.).”

“If we divide the field in half, you notice that there are five players on the right and five on the left. With those five, they advance diagonally on one side and then serve the walking players coming from the other side. Great job.”

“The three midfielders also protect their defenders well, allowing the three attackers to play their game in possession of the ball. The field is always divided in two and then the walking people are sought on the other side. This team is incredibly well balanced.”
