TORONTO, Ont. (June 10, 2021) – Canada Basketball announced Thursday the list of players from the National Senior Women’s Team who will participate in theAmeriCup Women FIBA 2021.
“After several weeks of training together, we are ready to get back on the field and compete against other teams in the Americas zone,” said Lisa Thomaidis, Head Coach of the National Senior Women’s Team. “This competition is an important step for us, since our goal is the search for excellence and a constant presence on the world stage.”
The 2021 FIBA Women’s AmeriCup will take place June 11-19 at the historic Coliseo Roberto Clemente in San Juan, which fans in Canada can follow live on DAZN.
Winner of two of the last three AmeriCup competitions, Canada has been on the podium eight times in the last nine competitions since the 2003 FIBA Women’s Americas Championships in Culiacan, Mexico.
The 2021 FIBA Women’s AmeriCup will start with a group stage, in which the teams will meet in a round-robin format for four days.
Canada is in Group A and will face the United States Virgin Islands (June 12 at 12:10 p.m. ET), Brazil (June 13 at 3:10 p.m. ET), El Salvador (June 14 at 12:10 p.m. ET) and Colombia (June 15 at 3:10 p.m. ET) in the group stage.
The top two teams from each group will advance to the semi-finals of the 2021 FIBA Women’s AmeriCup, where the best team from group A will face the second team from group B while the best team from group B will face the second team from group A. The winners of the two semi-finals will compete for the continental title in the final on June 19.
This tournament is one of four Continental Cups in women’s basketball, which will qualify 16 teams (four for the 2021 FIBA Women’s AmeriCup) for the qualifying tournaments for the FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup from February 6 to 14, 2022. four top teams from each qualifying tournament will advance to the 2022 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup in Sydney, Australia, from September 22 to October 1. Following the 2021 FIBA Women’s AmeriCup, Canada will return to Tampa, Florida to continue their preparation for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.
Canada was supposed to train this summer in Edmonton, host city of the Senior Women’s National Team since 2013, to prepare for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. However, due to the current COVID-19 pandemic and quarantine protocols that exist to train in Canada, the team will set up their training camp in Tampa Bay, Florida.
Canada’s Senior Women’s National Team remains fourth in the FIBA Women’s World Rankings presented by Nike, following the rankings update following the November window of qualifying matches for the FIBA Women’s EuroBasket 2021.
