Stefanos Tsitsipas suffered a severe blow of fate on the final day of the French Open.

After losing the final at the French Open, the Greek tennis pro announced that his grandmother died shortly before the final on Sunday. The 22-year-old wrote on Monday night on social media: “Five minutes before I stepped onto the square, my beloved grandmother lost her battle with life.”

Tsitsipas lost to world number one Novak Djokovic from Serbia in Paris, despite a 2-0 lead, and so missed his first title at a Grand Slam tournament.

“Putting trophies in the air and celebrating victories is something, but not everything.”

“Life is not about winning or losing. It’s about enjoying every single moment, whether alone or with others, ”wrote Tsitsipas. “Putting trophies in the air and celebrating victories is something, but not everything.”

The fourth in the world rankings, who looked inconsolable after the match, added a photo of himself with the silver tray for the defeated finalist: “I want to say that regardless of the day, the circumstances and the situation, everything is dedicated to her and only her.” He thanked her his grandmother for raising his father, who is also his trainer. “Without him it would not have been possible,” wrote Tsitsipas.
