A Canadian leads the United States Open

Canadian golfer Mackenzie Hughes took the lead in the US Open after three rounds, posting a 68 (-3) card on Saturday in San Diego, Calif.

The new leader is joined at the first echelon by South African Louis Oosthuizen and American Russell Henley, who played 70 (-1) and par 71 respectively.

Having hit the ball 208 (-5) times in this tournament, they claim two strokes ahead of Northern Irishman Rory McIlroy and American and defending champion Bryson DeChambeau.

Hughes could become the first Canadian in history to win the United States Open, which premiered in 1895.

The 30-year-old Ontarian started his round with two bogeys and a birdie on the nine to go. The second half of his run was much more successful, he adding two birdies and an eagle to his harvest.

Richard Bland, who had surprisingly climbed to the top of the standings on Friday, struggled and fell 20 steps. The Englishman played 77 (+6) and is now tied with par and five strokes behind the leaders.

The only other Canadian still in contention, Adam Hadwin also lost feathers by virtue of his card of 75 (+4). Ranked 41st with several other golfers, he is nine strokes off the top.
