Wullaert, De Caigny and four other RSCA-players drop out of Red Flames after corona outbreak | Belgian Football

Red FlamesDue to a corona outbreak among the women of RSC Anderlecht, national coach Ives Serneels has had to change his selection for the June period in Madrid and the friendly match of the Red Flames against Spain (10 June). Five players were selected to replace Tessa Wullaert, Tine De Caigny and co.

In the run-up to the qualifying campaign for the 2023 World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, the Red Flames will go on a short training period in Spain in early June. There, a friendly match against the host country is scheduled for 10 June in the Estadio Municipal Santo Domingo de Madrid (8 p.m.). Two days later, the Belgian soccer women play a friendly international match against Luxembourg in the stadium of FC Wiltz 71 (6 p.m.).

Serneels had already announced his 24-man selection for the Spanish stage on May 20, but is forced to leave a number of strong players at home. Due to a corona outbreak at RSC Anderlecht, goalkeeper Justien Odeurs, defenders Laura Deloose and Charlotte Tison and attackers Tine De Caigny, Sarah Wijnants and Tessa Wullaert are dropped from the selection. From RSCA, Serneels only keeps defender Laura De Neve – who works in healthcare and has already been vaccinated – on board. Kassandra Missipo is missing due to injury.

The vacant places are occupied by Lisa Lichtfus (Standard), Constance Brackman (Standard), Silke Vanwynsberghe (Ghent), Aster Janssens (Genk) and Jassina Blom (PEC Zwolle). Serneels therefore descends with 23 instead of 24 Flames to Spain. Ten more players will be added to the roster for the game against Luxembourg: Estée Cattoor, Marie Detruyer, Loredana Humartus, Fran Meersman, Fleur Pauwels, Lisa Petry, Auke Swevers, Lyndsey Van Belle, Sien Vandersanden, Luna Vanzeir. They will join after the return of the team from Spain.

The pot against Luxembourg will be the last match for the first World Cup qualifier against Poland on September 17th. Albania, Kosovo, Norway and Armenia are also in the group of the Belgians. The Red Flames won only one of their four preparatory matches, against Ireland (1-0). The Netherlands (1-6), Germany (2-0 away) and Norway (0-2) were a size too big.
