Francisco Duarte, footballer of Rentistas de Uruguay, he had to be dramatically rescued from the 11th floor of the Hotel de las Américas in the early hours of Tuesday, when he was cornered by fire. The Uruguayan footballer, who tonight will face Racing for the Copa Libertadores, was saved by the firefighters of the City of Buenos Aires at the moment in which he hung from the balcony in his attempt to escape the fire.

After being rescued, Duarte, 21, was taken to a hospital as a precaution, where he underwent medical check-ups that confirmed his good health. Fortunately, the Uruguayan midfielder has already left the health center and is staying at the Hotel Presidente.

Although the Rentistas delegation is hosted at the Hilton, Duarte was at the Hotel de las Américas, where foreigners are isolated with Covid-19, because he had tested positive upon arrival in Argentina. Andrés Rodales and Damián Malrechauffe, companions of the affected player, were also at the scene of the events because they were infected, but they managed to escape the flames without problems.

According to the survey carried out, the fire started because of a short circuit in a minibar in room 1106, which was empty. At the time of the fire, 42 patients were housed. Only two of them, including Duarte, were hospitalized for a few hours and then discharged.

The Uruguayan Rentistas footballer spoke at Sportia after the fire at the Hotel de las Américas that had him as the main protagonist and he admitted the fear he felt when he was cornered by fire. “I was scared. It was just luck”, said the 21-year-old midfielder, who was also calm after the incident: “I am very well, now I am very calm.”

Likewise, Duarte told why he was hospitalized and what was the result of the check-ups they performed on him. “The worrying thing about yesterday was that as the room was burning, I inhaled a lot of smoke and that could have contaminated me. Fortunately today they did the studies and everything went well”revealed.

On the other hand, he recalled what happened and specified how it all happened with a chilling story. “It was at two in the morning. I was sleeping and I started to hear some noises from the next room, like knocks, or I don’t know what it was, and I wake up. And then when I wake up the room was full of smoke”, he detailed.
