TV rights – Canal + recovers all Ligue 1 Uber Eats matches until the end of the 2020-2021 season

The crisis in French football’s TV rights knows its epilogue, for the 2020-2021 season. The Professional Football League (LFP) has just announced the signing of a global agreement with the Canal + Group for the remainder of the current season.

In details, the Canal + Group will henceforth have all the rights to Ligue 1 Uber Eats exclusively with this acquisition of the Médiapro (Téléfoot) prizes. According to The team or RMC Sport, the Canal + group will pay around 35 million euros for these lots until the end of the current season. In total, over the 2020-2021 season, the LFP would receive some 670M € in domestic TV rights according to RMC Sport. By adding around € 70 million in international rights, the LFP can expect a total of close to € 740 to € 750 million. A lesser evil while waiting to know the rest and a possible call for tenders on a new next cycle or by mutual agreement.

It remains to be seen how Canal + will break down its matches or sublicense some of them, in particular to beIN SPORTS which is distributed by the Canal + Group under an exclusive agreement.

“From the 25th day of Ligue 1 Uber Eats and Ligue 2 BKT, and until the end of the 2020-2021 season, the CANAL + Group will have exclusive audiovisual rights, live and in full, of all Ligue 1 Uber Eats matches and eight of the ten Ligue 2 BKT matches. In addition to the rights to these matches, the CANAL + Group will have all the magazine rights during the week and at weekends ” states the press release.

“Following the call for tenders declared unsuccessful this week, the Professional Football League and the CANAL + Group are delighted to have found a global solution to display the matches of Ligue 1 Uber Eats and Ligue 2 BKT to a large audience for the 2020-2021 season ”.

How much does the Canal + and beIN SPORTS subscription cost at the moment?

A few days ago, the Canal + Group had revised upwards its subscription rates to its channels and in particular its SPORT offer including the beIN SPORTS and Eurosport channels.

Right now it will cost you € 40.99 per month for 2 years for the Canal + pack and the SPORT + pack including chains Canal +, Canal + Sport, beIN SPORTS, Eurosport and even Infosport + channels. Non-binding offers are also offered by the Canal + Group, which should allow some to afford less at the end of the season.

Let us add that offers are also proposed only for under 26s. Canal + notably costs € 10.49 / month.

As a reminder, Canal + and beIN SPORTS will again broadcast the entire UEFA Champions League from the next 2021-2022 season. For its part, beIN SPORTS owns the main European football championships, the NBA, the NFL, the Ligue 2 BKT … Finally, In particular, Eurosport holds all the rights to ATP tennis tournaments.

What if this acquisition for the rest of the 2020-2021 season was an opportunity for the Canal + Group to launch a new thematic subscription offer dedicated to Ligue 1 and / or its catalog of sports rights?
