Members of the Latvian women’s national team have held their first trainings in Riga under the leadership of the team’s new head coach Gundars Vētra, the Latvian Basketball Union (LBS) reports on Monday.

Taking into account the desire of the players to resume preparations for the next season after a short vacation and the readiness of the coaches to work, the Latvian Basketball Union has provided an opportunity to train players who spend June in Latvia, including several US university students. On Monday, 13 basketball players were in training – Ilze Jākobsone, Nikola Ozola, Elizabete Bulāne, Ieva Pulvere, Māra Mote, Vanessa Jasa, Paula Strautmane, Karlīne Pilābere, Aija Jurjāne, Digna Strautmane, Aleksa Gulbe, Anete Šteinberga and Laura Meldere.

Coaches Ainars Zvirgzdiņš, Mārtiņš Zībarts and Matīss Rožlapa, as well as physical fitness coach Ivars Ikstens assist the head coach of the women’s national team Gundars Vētra. Doctor – Mārtiņš Powder, physiotherapists Līga Folkmane-Eglīte and Toms Ābeltiņš.

The initial plan was to start individual training in July, but given the great response, we started working earlier. We work on individual skills. It is expected that we will work in this mode until the middle of June. The July plan also remains valid – there will be both training and testing games. “

Work will also continue on the youth teams entered in the “Challenger” tournaments organized by FIBA. Candidates for the U-20 women’s team (born in 2001/2002) under the leadership of head coach Mārtiņš Zībarts will train four times a week until June 10. After that, purposeful preparations for the FIBA ​​”Challenger” tournament, which will take place from July 11 to 19, will begin.

The U-18 team will have individual training from May 31 to June 20, followed by a training camp (FIBA “Challenger” from July 25 to August 2).

The training process for the U-16 team has been ongoing since January. The FIBA ​​”Challenger” tournament will take place from August 7 to 15, the teams will compete for tickets to the 2022 FIBA ​​U-17 World Cup.
