The Giro in pictures: Explosions near Vermeersch and Cavagna, Bettiol above | Giro

Alberto Bettiol (EF) once again made the Italians crow with pleasure. The Italian ex-winner of the Tour of Flanders was the strongest breakaway. Watch here how his stage victory in the Giro came about.

1. Sagan does everything he can to get as many riders away as possible

Peter Sagan and the points jersey, it is a common thread in the grand tours. The Slovak wants to keep his relatively small bonus today and uses a striking defensive tactic, which is really atypical for Sagan.

Bora-Hansgrohe has only one goal: to get the largest possible leading group away, so that all points are gone for Sagan’s competitors. In that process, the Slovak regularly intimidates his colleagues who still want to attack.

2. Sabatini decides: 23 escapees

The points jersey gets its way and can count on Fabio Sabatini (Cofidis) to lock the peloton. 23 escapees leave at the end of a fast opening hour.

Gianni Vermeersch is the only fellow countryman in the leading group, where we spot many fast and explosive types such as Diego Ulissi, Alberto Bettiol, Francesco Gavazzi, Patrick Bevin, Andrea Vendrame, Nikias Arndt, and Stefano Oldani.

3. Cavagna starts the time trial

At 35 kilometers from the finish, the decor changes with more protrusions, where Alberto Bettiol quickly underlines his fine legs.

That has a paralyzing effect on his fellow refugees and at 26 kilometers from the finish, Rémi Cavagna starts his dress rehearsal for the Milan time trial.

Gianni Vermeersch sees the danger, but limits himself. Did his legs cramp or was there a mechanical hiccup?

4. Bettiol proves its blood form

The French high-speed train has chosen the right time, but the last nod is too much for it. Assassin Alberto Bettiol attacks his prey and kills the Frenchman to death. Bettiol completes its mission in style.

5. The longest ride of this Giro ends up in Bettiol’s basket
