After his Tour victory in 2019, Egan Bernal fell into a deep crisis. Inexplicable back problems plagued the Colombian. And the burden of having to win. With the triumph at the Giro d’Italia 2021, all of that is forgotten.

Nafter his hard-fought victory at the Giro d’Italia, Egan Bernal sank into his girlfriend’s arms at the finish. In his tired eyes a mixture of relief, happiness, exhaustion. Having worn the pink jersey as far as Milan, he said a little later, would help to regain motivation and enjoyment in his sport in the long term. Motivation and joy that his triumph at the Tour de France 2019 at the precocious age of 22 had robbed him.

At that age you don’t win the Tour de France, in principle it’s impossible. The Tour de France is won by no young men, no greenhorns on the bike, the Tour de France is won by seasoned men who have been hardened over hundreds of thousands of kilometers by bike. Bernal had overruled this iron rule. He had won, and what then fell on him, especially in his cycling-crazy homeland of Colombia, was more than what a quiet young man like him can cope with. He had become a national hero overnight.
