The 37-year-old Swiss striker Andres Ambühl started his 111th match at the world championships. He is second in the history and only former German defender Udo Kiessling is ahead of him with 119 starts.

“I honestly say I didn’t know about it at all. Anyway, I think it’s interesting numbers. When you finish, you will probably think about what you’ve achieved, but now I don’t think about it at all. Now I just want to play and win,” said Ambühl , who is already playing at the 16th World Cup.

The Slovaks entered the match well, they won the first third on shots at the goal clearly 12: 4 and it was not long before Gernát sent them into the lead after only three minutes. But at the end of the seventh minute came a turning point. He had to hurry after an unnecessary attack with a penalty of five minutes and until the end of the match in the cabins.

The Swiss didn’t shine in the power play and almost collected themselves when the goalkeeper Berra made a mistake behind the goal. Liška presented the puck in front of an empty goal to Sukeľ, but the puck slipped from the stick. The punishment did not take long. Diaz opened the scoring when his attempt first broke Studenic’s staff and then changed direction completely.

From the second period onwards, it became more and more apparent how the Swiss with the leading goal gained solid ground under their feet. They were significantly helped by the power play after only 25 seconds of the middle act, when Andrighetto took advantage of the hidden view of goalkeeper Hudáček.

The Slovaks could only return Hrivík to the game a moment later while playing in fours on both sides, but at the end of a nice interplay he ended up from the ring for throwing only into the right stick of Berr’s goal. In the 26th minute, he pushed through another shot through the Loeffel screen.

Hockey World Championship 2021

The World Hockey Championship is in progress from May 21 to June 6 in Latvia. All group matches and playoffs are hosted by Riga. The Czech national team plays in group A. Zlato from 2019 defends the selection of Finland, the Czechs will try to improve the fourth place.

After half the match, when four to four were played again, Lantoši did not take the promising opportunity. Hudáček then caught Hischier, but in the 37th minute Hofmann caught him on the closer post.

The weakening of the Slovaks from the very end of the second part ended in a time of 40:38, when Meier added another goal. Kurashev scored in the 45th minute, only 38 seconds later Krištof lost Berra to a clean sheet. The mistake of the Slovaks symbolized another penalty until the end of the match, which Rosandič received. Hofmann and Loeffel added their second interventions today during the five-minute numerical advantage.

“We have to completely forget about the outcome of today’s match. We just need to keep concentrating on our game and try to play without unnecessary exclusions, because we still have three matches ahead of us (in a group) and we will hardly win if we are still on penalty bench, “said the author of the only goal of the losers, Michal Krištof.

“We have to quickly throw this match behind our heads and just try to be as prepared as possible for the next one,” added defender Martin Gernát.
