Roland Garros> Simon sur Monfils: “I don’t really know what’s in his head, except that it’s always a mess”

While at a press conference after losing to an impressive Marton Fucsovics (4–6, 1–6, 6–7 (5)), Gilles Simon was notably questioned about the Gaël Monfils case. Close and friend of the Parisian, “Gilou” believes that it is not a problem of envy but more a question of adjustment.

“I think the urge is there, it’s never the problem. If he didn’t care, he wouldn’t be here. The desire is there. I think he’s trying things, it’s not easy, he’s taking a really different path, and the results aren’t there. So it is not easy. He is in a situation which is not obvious. Afterwards, you have to see with him. I’m not sure what’s on his mind, other than it’s still a mess. But even when things are going well, it’s mess in his head, it’s not necessarily a bad sign. He’s made directions in his game that’s very different from what he’s been doing lately, and he’s struggling to find the right balance. That’s it, that’s always what happens when you search. He is perhaps too extreme and drastic in this change. I hope he finds the happy medium at some point. “
