Thanks to a late goal from Bornauw on the final matchday, Cologne was able to escape the direct relegation to the 2nd division. With Holstein Kiel it may have had a small name in the jump-off, the club from the north of Germany is an opponent to be feared.
Earlier this season, Kiel was able to conquer Bayern Munich’s scalp in the cup. In the end, they only stranded in the semi-finals against Dortmund.
Nevertheless, Cologne grabbed Kiel by the throat in the first half, but with some luck the visitors were able to survive. Cologne would regret not being able to complete its chances. After a corner, Lorenz was able to make the important goal and Serra could even have turned it into a dream result, but he hit the bar.
On Saturday, Cologne will get a second chance to make up for the defeat in Kiel. If Holstein Kiel also survives that match, it will play at the highest level for the first time since the founding of the Bundesliga (in 1963). More than 100 years ago, Kiel became champion of Germany.
