Reclaim the Game (Young World newspaper)

The so-called 50 plus one rule protects against uncontrollable takeover of football clubs by investors. Protest banners from fans of VfB Stuttgart (11.2.2018)

Another ghost season is over – and what happens? There is wailing again. But not from the fans, they also survived this season with ease.

Instead, those responsible for the clubs complain about a loss of income and rant about the need for further investors in their gaming operating companies. From the trade journal Kicker Bremen’s CFO Klaus Filbry is photographed. In all seriousness he is of the opinion there that one has to discuss »50 + 1« in order to be able to allegedly attract new investors. The requirement essentially states that clubs must always hold the majority of the corporations into which they outsource their professional teams.

No, Mr. Filbry, we fans are not discussing »50 + 1«. Neither now nor ever. Anyway: where have you been in the last few months? Are you familiar with the »Future of Professional Football« initiative? Is that the humility much invoked by the German Football League (DFL)?

It is hard to believe that a representative of a DFL club wants to shake up the festivals of membership again a few times after the disastrous collapse of the planned Super League. Just as if there hadn’t been any Europe-wide fan protests. Anyone with open eyes and ears could neither overlook nor overhear how much the fans on the island, for example, envy us for “50 + 1”.

But we can not only help Mr. Filbry, but also everyone else who wants to cycle in his slipstream. Just study the documents for the new Europe-wide fan initiative “Reclaim the Game”. In it, fans from all over Europe have formulated demands on professional football. It would be advisable for club representatives like Filbry to internalize this and enter into a discussion with fans and colleagues.

And if Mr. Filbry still has some catching up to do, the numerous fan initiatives from the Bremen Hanseatic city, but also from the rest of the republic, are happy to help.

“Sport free!” From the fan lawyer.
