Zinedine Zidane is apparently submitting his resignation
Status: 09:46 a.m.
After a messed up season, Zinedine Zidane is leaving for the second time as coach of Real Madrid. This is reported by several Spanish media. There is a lot of work to be done on the successor, as a look at the Spanish EM squad shows.
Real Madrid are apparently without a coach after an unsuccessful season. Zinedine Zidane resigned on Wednesday evening. Spanish media report this unanimously. He had informed the team and club management about this decision. An official confirmation from the club was still pending on Thursday morning.
Real had failed in the semi-finals of the Champions League and had lost their last chance at the championship on the penultimate matchday of the league. This was won for the first time in seven years by local rivals Atletico Madrid.
The 48-year-old Frenchman ends his coaching engagement with the royal team for the second time at his own request. This time, however, under completely different circumstances. Zidane had already resigned as coach after three years in 2018, but had previously won the Champions League three times in a row. In 2019, the former world footballer returned to the bench.
Conte and Raúl are traded
A number of successors are already being traded. Among others Antonio Conte, who has just led Inter Milan to the Italian championship, but is leaving the club anyway. Another option could be Real legend Raúl, who was recently associated with Eintracht Frankfurt. The former striker is currently training for Madrid’s second team.
Whoever takes on the job has a lot of work ahead of them. A look at the Spanish national team shows how bad things are at Real Madrid at the moment. After national coach Luis Enrique renounced record national player Sergio Ramos (35), not a single Real professional is going to the EM for Spain.
