Phil Mickelson will return to the US Golf Open in 2021

The United States Golf Association revealed that he extended a special invitation to Phil Mickelson for him US Open to be held from June 17 to 20 at the grass of the Torrey Pines in San Diego, Mickelson’s hometown.

“Winning the US Open has been a lifelong dream. It’s been elusive because I’ve been around so many times. But you can’t win if you don’t play. I am honored and grateful to the USGA for the opportunity to play in my hometown on a golf course where I grew up, ”said the six-time tournament runner-up.

With 50 years, Mickelson is ranked 113 in the Official World Golf Ranking, and to be able to attend the event it was necessary for him to be in the top 60 so the exemption was necessary to be able to be part of the field.

In your career as a professional Mickelson has competed 31 times in the US Open and only one issue has been missed in 1994 and it was because he attended his daughter’s school graduation.

In the history of the US Open only one player with an exemption managed to win the major and it was Hale Irwin in 1990.
