Paula Longoria from Mexico was elected to the Sports Athletes Dream Committee

Nine-time gold medalist Paula Longoria from Mexico was elected to the Sports Athletes Committee of Panama, along with four other people.

Here in Lima 2019, Longoria competed to be the first podium in the singles, doubles and tennis competitions, having already done it in Guadalajara 2011 and Toronto 2015.

The 30-year-old was voted to be part of the Athletes Committee in Panama by her peers, and 1,838 athletes voted for five of the 13 candidates during the Games.

She is joined by Canadian Longoria, Melissa Humana Paredes, current beach volleyball world champion.

Tony Azevedo, part of the United States men’s water polo team that won gold at Guadalajara 2011, was also chosen.

Bronze medalist from the 2008 Beijing Olympics in Brazil Isabel Swan and 19-year-old Parabadian cyclist Amber Joseph were the other two athletes to join the committee.

The new members will now serve an eight-year term on the committee.

The current Canadian president Alexandra Orlando and Andrea Estrada of Guyana, the Brazilian Thiago Pereira, the Cuban Megin López and the Mexican Guillermo Pérez completed their terms at the end of these Games.

The Athletes Committee will select a new president in the coming weeks.

“On behalf of the Panama Athletes Committee, we are very excited to welcome these five new members to our Powerful Voices team who represent the great athletes of the Americas,” said Orlando.

“These representatives, chosen by their peers, will bring a new perspective and renewed energy to our mission.

“I am honored to be the chair of this committee, along with many distinguished colleagues and friends.

“We have taken many steps to strengthen the voice of athletes in the Americas and I know that this next group of leaders will continue to fight for more rights and representation for all athletes.”
