Meritocracy did not prevail, it was my best season

Tomorrow night at midnight Roberto Mancini will dispel the last doubts on the composition of the final list of the 26 players of theItaly who will make up the squad that will dispute the Europeans which are about to begin next 11 June. From the current list of 28 two names will be cut: Mancini and the bruised Sensi could give way to Toloi and Cristante, with small chances also for Raspadori to return in place of Politano if the young Sassuolo striker gives sufficient physical guarantees after the commitment with the Under 21 team.

Who surely knows he has no chance to wear the blue shirt at the next European Championships is Angelo Ogbonna, who had already been excluded from the enlarged list of the 33 pre-convened who met last week in Sardinia. Interviewed by Fanpage a couple of weeks ago, the 33-year-old defender from Cassino, under the West Ham after spending with the Juventus and Turin shirts, he confessed to still believing in the call, even if the games seemed to be made.

Now that the dream has finally gone, Ogbonna vents on the pages of the ‘Corriere della Sera’: “I am very amazed and also embittered, perhaps he did not take into consideration the West Ham championship, yet we fought until the end for the Champions League qualification with Jorginho and Palmieri’s Chelsea, who finished higher but proved not to be any team“.

In sport, meritocracy must prevail – attacks Ogbonna – based on the league in which one plays, the statistics, the value of the player. And this time in my opinion it did not prevail. Without a doubt it was my best season: after the age of 30 a defender enters full maturity and reads the game differently“.

The central player who has been twice Scudetto with Juventus remains the satisfaction of having become the fourth Italian ever for Premier League appearances, at an altitude of 163, overtaking Carlo Cudicini. Not a small achievement.
