He did not have to force his return. After more than a month without playing, Dominic Thiem signed an expeditious victory, on his return to competition, in less than an hour of play against Marcos Giron (6-1, 6-3). In the next round of the Masters 1000 in Madrid, the Austrian will face Alex de Minaur in the round of 16.
Seed number 3, Thiem sent the first round in 22 minutes of play, against a clumsy, helpless Giron guilty of too many unforced errors. Very convincing, Thiem relied on a solid first serve, and flew over the game. With a little more response in the face in the second set, Thiem was able to break when necessary to secure a qualification without trembling, against a conciliatory opponent, and quite simply not at the level of the Austrian.

De Minaur in 8th, to raise the level
The American, 91st player in the world, paradoxically let go to sign beautiful sequences when he was used to save three match points at 5-3. But it was not enough, and the fourth was good for Thiem. On clay, his favorite surface, the world No. 4 will find Australian Alex de Minaur next Thursday, who took advantage of the withdrawal of Lloyd Harris, injured, in a much stronger opposition. Quite sharp and well on pace, Thiem convinced. May his fans be reassured, yes he is doing better, yes he is doing well.
