Big favorite at ROY, LaMelo Ball hit the screen this year. So it’s no wonder that some are planning big things for him. Recently questioned about the guy, Magic Johnson was particularly frank about his expectations of the leader.
Drafted in third position in the 2020 draft, LaMelo Ball has fully justified the expectations placed on him by the Hornets. In addition to producing superb stats every night (nearly 16 points, 6 rebounds and over 6 assists per game), the rookie has transformed his franchise, which has developed an attractive basketball this season. The icing on the cake, Charlotte even invited herself to the Play-In-Tournament, which nobody expected.
As a result, many famous former players have fallen under his spell. A league legend has even already taken him under his wing. This time around, it’s Magic Johnson’s turn to praise him. Invited to a baseball game in North Carolina, the Hall of Famer didn’t mince words about the point guard, bluntly believing that he could soon be eligible for the highest individual honor:

According to Magic, LaMelo Ball may one day become an MVP contender. He really appreciates the way Ball makes his teammates better.
Strong words from the former Laker, who therefore sees a bright future for the brother of Lonzo Ball. Be careful not to cast bad luck on LaMelo, Magic is known to get carried away a bit quickly. We all remember his praise for Jimmer Fredette during his draft, which then completely disappeared …
Nevertheless, it seems unlikely that the Hornet will follow the same trajectory as the old BYU one. Well supervised with James Borrego as coach, and veterans such as Terry Rozier or Gordon Hayward as teammates, LaMelo has everything it takes to progress slowly. Charlotte is not expected to be a short-term contender, so no need to rush things.
Tenth in 2020-21 (33-39), the Hornets still have a big room for improvement. Adding a big-caliber interior to the roster next offseason wouldn’t be a bad thing, in order to give the point guard a target in the paint. Given the boy’s undeniable qualities in the cast, it would be a shame not to make the most of them.
A true phenomenon this season, LaMelo Ball has brought almost everyone close to him, including Magic Johnson. It is now a matter of confirming in 2021-22. To the mind of the probable Rookie of the Year, it’s totally in his ropes.
