It is a beautiful day for Damián van der Vaart. The son of Rafael van der Vaart and Sylvie Meis signed his first professional contract on Friday – on his fifteenth birthday. Esbjerg fB has committed it until mid-2023.
Damián has thus taken the first step to follow in the footsteps of his father. “Incredibly proud and what a special birthday present,” writes the former player of Ajax, Real Madrid, Hamburger SV and Tottenham Hotspur on Twitter. “I am delighted to report that Damián has signed his first contract.”

Esbjerg is the club where Rafael van der Vaart ended his rich career. The 109-time Orange-international left for Denmark to be closer to his girlfriend Estavana Polman. She has been playing handball at Team Esbjerg since 2013.
Damián is overjoyed with his first contract. “This is a big day for me and I am very happy to have been able to sign a contract with Esbjerg,” he says on his club’s website. “I feel fantastic at this club and this is the perfect environment for me to develop further.”
