Japan’s Prime Minister wants spectators to watch the Olympics

Japan’s Prime Minister has reiterated his wish that the Olympic Games take place with spectators.

On a press conference Suga said that professional baseball and soccer games in Japan are being played in the stadiums with a certain number of fans, while measures are being taken to prevent the spread of the coronavirus.

No viewers from abroad, but from Germany

“It would be possible to take such an approach for the Olympics,” said Suga, while also saying that protecting the life and health of Japanese citizens is a priority.

It has already been decided that no spectators from abroad will be allowed to attend the games. The question of whether domestic viewers are allowed to watch should be clarified in the next few weeks. Apart from the athletes, around 78,000 people are expected to attend the games. Suga said the number was well below the 180,000 originally planned. “We will demand that the number be reduced further,” said Suga.

Prime Minister wants to expel officials and media representatives who violate conditions

The Japanese prime minister also said officials and media representatives are being asked to use designated accommodation facilities to prevent them from having contact with Japanese people. In addition, they are asked to only use buses that are provided for them.

“Anyone who does not adhere to the requirements will be expelled from the country,” says Suga. “Comprehensive measures are taken to control their activities, with violations leading to exclusion from the events.”
