Japanese medics call for cancellation of Tokyo Olympics / Article

In Japan, doctors are calling for the cancellation of the Tokyo Olympics scheduled for this summer, noting that Japanese hospitals are already overcrowded and the epidemiological situation is far from stable.

A few months before the upcoming Olympic Games in Japan, the number of people infected with Covid-19 has risen. In recent days, Covid-19 has also claimed more and more victims.

The Tokyo Medical Association, which represents more than 6,000 doctors, explains in an open letter to the prime minister that hospital capacity is close to the limit, with several hospitals already running out of beds. The state of emergency in Tokyo and several prefectures has been extended until the end of May.

However, the Prime Minister of Japan Josihide Suga is convinced that the Olympic Games can be held safely, taking care of various precautions. For example, avoiding immigrants coming into contact with local people.

Opinion polls show that the majority of Japanese people are opposed to hosting the Olympic Games. However, the organizers of the Games have repeatedly emphasized that the Tokyo Olympics, which should have taken place last year, will not be canceled again.

The Tokyo Olympic Games, postponed from 2020, are scheduled to run from July 23 to August 8.
