Nico Hoerner sat on the grass Sunday in Cincinnati, dealing not only with the effects of a collision with Ian Happ, but also with concerns about his friend and teammate.

Hoerner was placed on the 10-day disabled list with a left forearm strain, while Happ came out with a blow to the rib, but no concussion symptoms.
“All things considered, we were both lucky,” Hoerner said. “I was really very concerned in the gardens, not knowing the condition he was in.”
The Cubs selected the contract of Venezuelan utility Ildemaro Vargas from Iowa to replace Hoerner on the active roster. Vargas started at second base in Game 1 of Tuesday’s doubleheader.
