Gustavo Alfaro: Ecuador is a reality, a rival to beat and the rivals know it | Football | sports

The coach of the National Team referred to his current stage and recalled when he came to replace Jordi Cruyff.

“Where is it written that Ecuador cannot be a champion?” That was the question posed by the Tricolor coach, Gustavo Alfaro, in dialogue with the Italian newspaper Tuttosport on Sunday, during which he referred to his time at the head of the Ecuador team.

“Ecuador is a reality, a rival to beat and the rivals know it”Said the Argentine strategist regarding the current situation of the National Team, third in the classification of the South American qualifier for the Qatar 2022 World Cup after the first four days.

In search of establishing itself in the access zone to the next World Cup, the Tri will visit Brazil on June 4 and four days later, on June 8, it will receive Peru in Quito within the framework of the World Cup.

In this context, Alfaro referred to the moment of the cast he leads: “I firmly believe that Ecuador has a generation of great players who, for the moment, have not yet obtained the international recognition they deserve. We are, however, on the right path and with the passage of time we will have more and more weight and credibility.”.

The 58-year-old strategist was introduced in his current position in September 2020 to replace Jordi Cruyff, who left the Tricolor after six months without even rehearsals or matches.

Alfaro referred to that: “When I arrived, the situation was not exactly simple: There were problems in the FEF (Ecuadorian Football Federation) after the departure of Cruyff with internal struggles to overthrow the president (Francisco Egas, in dispute with his then vice president Jaime Estrada Medranda). I began to work to understand where we were, what we had to do ”.

And he continued: “I had to make a quick diagnosis, find out what I had, what I needed, what was missing. The boys collaborated a lot. It’s a pleasure working with people like that. They immediately lined up behind our principles, they understood my idea of the game. We wanted to generate in the team the feeling of not feeling inferior to anyone, obviously with the fair respect that must be given to rivals. I told them: ‘Be aware of your qualities, your abilities. Start by looking at the front of the shirt, the one with the yellow, blue and red crest. And not the one on the back with your name on it. When they do, they will really be able to play against everyone to be on par with all the rivals. (D)
