Giro mountain stage in pictures: Caruso surprised in descent, Vervaeke Belgian of the day | Giro

The 20th stage in the Giro was an exciting spectacle. Damiano Caruso rewarded his regularity with a stage win, while Daniel Felipe Martinez was of gold value for Bernal’s pink jersey. Watch the most striking moments of the 20th stage here.

1. De Bondt is an instigator of an early breakaway with Vervaeke

Belgian champion Dries De Bondt turns the assault mill back on track after 30 kilometers, with Louis Vervaeke in his wheel. They are accompanied by 7 companions.

De Bondt turns out to be the big engine and wants to sell Vervaeke with the largest possible margin in the mountain zone.

2. Vervaeke flutters uphill from the leading group

Because the peloton keeps the lead under 4 minutes, Vervaeke shakes the tree early on the 1st climb of the day, the San Bernardino pass.

Only the Austrian Grossschartner can follow our compatriot in the first instance. The Italians Albanian and Visconti and the Swiss Pellaud arrive later on the climb to pick up their wagon at the leaders duo.

3. Caruso (2nd) surprises Bernal and Yates in the descent

In the descent of the San Bernardino pass, Bardet flashes away from the peloton with 2 team mates. Bilbao does the same with Caruso, the 2nd from the stand.

Caruso and Bardet take up position in the leading group of Vervaeke. The teams of Bernal and Yates do not panic.

4. Martinez demolishes favorites group, even Yates dissolves

Bernal’s master-servant Daniel Felipe Martinez single-handedly drives the group of favorites into pieces and pieces.

When challenger Simon Yates and Joao Almeida also go overboard, the world looks even brighter for Bernal.

5. Super-strong Caruso records 1st stage victory in the grand tour

Caruso no longer gives up ground on 1st pursuer Bernal. On the contrary. The Italian records his 1st stage victory in a grand tour and consolidates his 2nd place in the standings.

Bernal is almost certain of the overall victory. A 2-minute lead should suffice in a flat time trial of 30 km.
